Welcome to Reviving the Ruins — an illustrated series dedicated to the commemoration of world heritage sites and artifacts affected by modern conflict.

Reviving the Ruins aims to serve as a tribute to lost heritage, while also providing a positive counterbalance to the negative images of destruction streaming through media outlets. By illustrating examples of artifacts and highlighting their unique details, the series will narrate tales of ancient history and help to document cultural identity so that it will not be lost to future generations.

The project will take a modern approach to illumination, addressing current affairs using modern materials. Instead of parchment/vellum and gold leaf, the process will include the use of stained paper, watercolour, and gilding fluid. Each illustrations will feature illuminated patterns, inspired by designs found at the original sites.
